The starting point for restoration is to conserve and to repair only the parts that are worn, broken or missing. In restoring old clocks, I balance the conservation of the original materials and design with the preservation of their function: telling the time.

The mechanisms of a clock are always subject to wear and tear, corrosion or sometimes unprofessional repairs. Therefore every restoration demands individual treatment depending of the origin and style of the clock and the materials and techniques in use when it was made.

A clockmaker needs to decide if a worn or broken part can be restored or has to be completely replaced. Knowledge of history and antique styles, skill in the use of old and new techniques and creativity are indispensable for the conservation and restoration of old clocks.
